    Cask ownership verification

Whisky casks change hands between distillers, brokers and private owners, yet proof of ownership is often a PDF certificate disconnected from the physical cask. Here is how to verify ownership properly.

What a cask owner should be able to show

Before buying or selling, both sides should be able to confirm:

    • The cask exists and is held in a named bonded warehouse
    • The cask number on the paperwork matches the physical cask
    • The fill details: spirit, fill date, cask type and original strength
    • The ownership history and the current registered owner

Why paper certificates are not enough

A certificate proves that a document was issued, not that the cask behind it is real, unsold or in the stated warehouse. Linking ownership to the tagged cask itself closes that gap.

    Proof tied to the liquid

SmartCask records ownership against the Fill Twin, so the proof follows the liquid. Data is split into three tiers: Public Data anyone can see on a scan, Proof Data that transfers to a new owner on sale, and Private Data visible only to the current owner.
